New Gold Medals Awarded to Captain’s Walk Wines; May 2008
Urban wineries are increasing across America. This includes Green Bay, and you won’t need to burn
much gas to sample Gold Medal Winning wines; simply drive downtown.
Green Bay’s own Captain’s Walk Winery just celebrated the one-year mark, and it’s not difficult to
understand why over 3,000 visitors have walked through its doors. The 2008 Tasters Guild
International Wine Judging Competition agrees that there is quality in our downtown, and has awarded
the young winery with two gold medals. Captain’s Sangiovese and Merlot were honored with this
distinct “gold medal” judging. Winemaker’s Assistant, PJ Koehler, offers the following notes on these
two reds:
Merlot at its best! A warm bouquet greets you with this wine, a sweet scent of dried plums, cured
tobacco, and cedar chest. Luxurious tannins and a bit of toasted oak stitch an infusion of ripe black
fruit flavors together in this harmonious ensemble.
This bold American Sangiovese shows just how rich, yet supple, this varietal can be. This wine
displays a subtle raisin nose with concentrated aromas of black cherry, briar berries, and a hint of
anise. While flavors of fresh raspberry and plum steal the show.
Taste these reds with any of Captain’s other seven award-winning wines six days a week (closed
Mondays) in the 150 year old historic house (now winery) at the corner of Crooks and Adams Streets.
Captain’s Walk Winery offers monthly Wine IQ nights and has just released its first vintage made from
locally harvested Marachel Foch grapes. The bottling of this rosé, “Maiden Voyage” will be in a
custom cast 750ml sailboat. While visiting, guests can sample at the 1920’s speakeasy bar, or take a
glass of wine to the private upstairs lounge.
